East Cape CrossFit Champs 2016 set the bar high for regional competitive athletes.

NUTRITECH CrossFit Athlete and winner of the East Cape CrossFit champs 2016, Dean Shaw shares on his perspective of the event that was held over the weekend of the 11th until the 13th of November.

“The 2nd Nutritech East Cape Champs saw an increase in number of competitors and consequently stronger pools of athletes in the individuals as well as teams categories.

This year saw the introduction of a swim event, which expanded upon the well rounded event programming.  This proved to throw a spanner in the works for many of the athletes!  With Dave Levey (CrossFit Algoa owner and NECC organizer) programming the event, no athlete gained a bias advantage as all aspects of competitive CrossFit came into play.  This, coupled with a new indoor venue (the Tramways Building), paved the way for a fun and well run competition going into Saturday and Sunday.

Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, two well known elite athletes, Nutritech sponsored athletes Jaco Van Der Vyver and Alan Foulis, withdrew unexpectedly with injuries just before the start of the competition.

Teams, scaled, Rx and Super Team divisions, tested their fitness head to head in their respective categories, showing all levels of abilities from novice right through to elite level athletes.  Many notable performances and PR’s (Personal Records) were witnessed across the board with many competitors lifting loads far greater than bodyweight!

After a tough weekend of varied functional movements performed across broad time and modal domains, the fittest in attendance rose to the top of the leaderboard and were left standing on top of the podium.

The NECC was successful in growing the awareness of health and fitness through the sport of CrossFit, and that any person, regardless of their current physical ability can benefit from this community driven sport.  We look forward to the growth of the Nutritech East Cape Champs in 2017!”
